I don’t know if anyone expected the level of success the Tulsa Golden Hurricane enjoyed in their first season in the AAC. A 21-9 record and 14-4 effort in the conference was surprising with a somewhat one dimensional, defense oriented style of play. The Golden Hurricane outscored opponents 65-61 with less then 40% shooting allowed but are not strangers to lighting up the scoreboard from time to time.
The Golden Hurricane aren’t explosive but very balanced with several capable scorers. Jason Woodard tallies a team high 15 points with Shaquille Harrison next in line with 13 points with both combining for almost ten boards. The key to winning in the postseason is what the secondary scorers do with four guys averaging between 7-9 points and 17 boards.
The Houston Cougars barely avoided the conference basement but pulled off a 66-60 victory against Tulane to keep their season going as they advanced to the quarterfinals versus Tulsa. The Green Wave hit shots at 41% and forced 16 turnovers which added up to ten more looks but the Cougars 47.8% accuracy and 13-5 advantage at the charity stripe overcame the mistakes.
Jherrod Stiggers shouldered the offensive load as he poured in a contest high 23 points with five yanks on 7-12 shooting including five bombs in 40 minutes of floor time. Cavon Baker was right on his heels with a 20 point performance on 6-7 from the floor while Devonta Pollard added 12 points, seven boards and five helpers on 6-10 marksmanship.
The Cougars are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS win and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games overall. Houston are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 vs. American Athletic Conference and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. win. The Golden Hurricane are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
Golden Hurricane are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 vs. American Athletic Conference and 10-3-1 ATS in their last 14 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record and 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. loss. Tulsa has some strong numbers against Houston and can not afford a letdown…
