The Hampton Pirates look to continue their playoff run when they face the Norfolk Spartans in the MEAC semifinals.

After outscoring Morgan State 91-71 in the MEAC opener the Hampton Pirates kept the points coming in a 76-71 decision against Maryland-Eastern Shore to advance to the semifinals. The Pirates simply got a lead and stubbornly held on to it despite being outshot 41%-38% with an 11-25 performance from long range being decisive. Deron Powers paced four double digit scorers with a game high 23 points followed by a 15 point, nine rebound effort from Reginald Johnson. Jervon Pressley and Brian Darden netted 12 points apiece with Quinton Chievous chipping in with seven points and five yanks.
The Norfolk Spartans are one of the few teams deemed capable of winning the MEAC crown but it didn’t seem to be in the cards when they trailed South Carolina State by double figures early on before roaring back for an easy 68-54 victory. A 38-23 second half run carried the day with the Bulldogs limited to less then 40% shooting. The Spartans fired away at 52%and sank six more free throws to pull away from an unexpected close contest to turn it in to a rout. Jeffrey Short was the offensive star with a game high 25 points on 9-14 from the floor while D’Shon Taylor added 16 points and seven boards. Jamel Fuentes netted eight points with three others tossing in five points.
