The South Alabama Jaguars (12-20) was able to hang on to defeat the AR-Little Rock Trojans 57-55 this past Thursday night to advance in the Sun Belt Tournament. The Jaguars earned the 6th seed for the Sun Belt Tournament finishing with a 9-11 conference record. South Alabama was able to hold AR-Little Rock to just 29.9% shooting from the field and 28.0% (7-25) from beyond the arc in the victory. Leading the way for the Jaguars was Dionte Ferguson who had 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 blocks. South Alabama is ranked 278th in the RPI Standings and has played the 199th ranked SOS. On the season, the Jaguars have been led by Ken Williams (15.9 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.5 apg) and Taishaun Johnson (12.9 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.2 apg). USA TODAY Sports
The UL-Monroe Warhawks finished the season with a 20-11 record and earned the 3 seed in the conference tournament with a 14-6 conference record. UL-Monroe had a great year in conference play and although they slipped a little towards the end of the season, they have a great defensive that certainly makes them a contender to win the Sun Belt. UL-Monroe is ranked 133rd in the RPI Standings and has played the 197th ranked SOS. The Warhawks biggest wins of the season have come against Georgia Southern and UL-Lafayette (twice).
UL-Monroe has averaged 64.5 ppg (ranked 247th) on 43.2% shooting (ranked 192nd). The Warhawks average 4.9 three-pointers per game (ranked 297th) on just 30.1% three-point shooting (ranked 316th). UL-Monroe has a 1.14 assist/turnover ratio (ranked 95th) and commits 11.6 turnovers per game (ranked 75th). Defensively, UL-Monroe is holding their opponents to an average of 60.2 ppg (ranked 34th) on 38.2% shooting (ranked 11th). The Warhawks are holding teams to 29.7% shooting from beyond the arc (ranked 13th). UL-Monroe averages 4.3 bpg (ranked 77th) and commits 15.5 personal fouls per game (ranked 20th). On the season, the Warhawks have been led by Tylor Ongwae (13.8 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 2.8 apg) and Majok Deng (9.9 ppg, 6.9 rpg, 1.4 bpg).
The Jaguars are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. win and 14-6 ATS in their last 20 Friday games. The Warhawks are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games following a S.U. win however, just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
UL-Monroe was able to win both games against Southern Alabama during the season (67-61 @ Home, 75-57 @ Southern Alabama). Southern Alabama has won three straight games however, has had trouble all season on the defensive end as they are one of the worst ranked teams in terms of point allowed. UL-Monroe has one of the best defensives in the Sun Belt and although they lost 3 of 5 to close out their season, I think they’ll be able to put up enough points against the Jaguars to win this one convincingly. I'm taking UL-Monroe to cover in this one.
