The Prairie View A&M Panthers don’t have eye popping numbers that jump off the page but after their 62-56 quarterfinal victory versus Jackson State the Panthers have won nine of ten. PV made an eleven point lead at the intermission stand up with Jackson State held to less then 36% shooting while forcing 19 turnovers. The Panthers countered with 45% accuracy and a decisive 13-7 edge at the stripe to negate 13 more looks from the Tigers. Treshawn Hagood gave the offense a game high 20 points and five assists on 7-13 marksmanship with Montrael Scott right on his heels with 19 points. Karm York and John Brisco combined for 15 points as the offense combined explosiveness and balance.
Texas Southern played some big programs well in their non conference schedule which might have prepared this team for the SWAC schedule. The Tigers showed why they are the top team in the league with a 95-74 rout of Alcorn State that was never competitive. The Tigers led by 13 at the break and didn’t let up until the final horn sounded. The Braves never got their offense in gear on 41% shooting and paid the price with Texas Southern hitting at a white hot 57% with an 18-9 advantage at the charity stripe to run away. Malcolm Riley led five double digit scorers with 21 points and ten boards with Madarious Gibbs scoring 18. David Blanks and Deverell Biggs tossed in 14 points apiece while Chris Thomas added ten points and a contest high 12 rebounds.
The Panthers are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 neutral site games and 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games following a S.U. win. Prairie View are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games following a ATS win and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 vs. Southwestern Athletic. The Tigers are 6-14 ATS in their last 20 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. win. In the world of small conferences Prairie View A&M is a cover machine and have played Texas Southern tight so I’ll grab the points…
