The Delaware State Hornets were a long shot to make the MEAC championship but not anymore as the shocked unbeaten conference leader North Carolina Central 63-57 in the semis. This looked to be setting up as a rout with the Eagles up by nine at the half way point. The Hornets did an about face with a 40-25 run over the final 20 minutes despite less then 40% shooting. UNCC didn’t take advantage with 43.8% and the Hornets did at the line with an 18-7 advantage. Amere May carried the offense with a game high 27 points on 7-21 shooting followed by a 16 point, eight rebound performance by Tyshawn Bell. Kendall Gray and Todd Hughes added seven points and ten combined boards with Bell recording four blocks.
The Hampton Pirates were also a long shot to make the MEAC title game with second seed Norfolk State standing in the way. As t turned out the Pirates were standing in the way after a 74-64 victory versus the Spartans in the semifinals. Hampton took a three point lead after 20 minutes and slowly pulled away. Both teams connected at around 38% but the Pirates dominated the charity stripe 32-19 to pull off the second shocker of the MEAC playoffs. Quinton Chievous poured in a contest high 23 points an hauled in 16 rebounds on 6-9 shooting with Reginald Johnson and Ke’Ron Brown tossing in 13 and eleven points. Brian Darden and Emmanuel Okoroba combined for 18 points with seven players scoring overall.
The Hornets are 4-12 ATS in their last 16 neutral site games. The Pirates are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a S.U. win and 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games overall. Hampton are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 vs. Mid-Eastern Athletic and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. This is an unexpected final an I suspect the Hornets are sky after their win more so then Hampton. I want the Hornets to win as a fan but I like this Pirates squad….
