The Southern Jaguars scored a narrow 68-66 decision over second seed Alabama State to reach the SWAC championship. Defense and mistakes ruled this one with the teams combining for 28 turnovers with Alabama State sinking shots at 30% and managing nine more shots on 21 offensive rebounds. The Jaguars totaled four more baskets to offset eight more Hornets free throws to barely squeeze by. Southern received 15 points and five yanks from Adrian Rodgers with Tre Lynch scoring 14 points on 4-14 shooting. Trelun Banks followed with 12 points while Frank Snow chipped in with seven points and a team high seven rebounds.
The Texas Southern Tigers have had their share of trouble with the Prairie View A&M Panthers but not in the SWAC semifinals on Friday as they pounded out a 90-77 victory to head to the championship game. The Panthers held a 51.6%-46.6% shooting edge but the Tigers were 6-12 from long range and a decisive 30-9 advantage at the foul line. The Texas Southern attack was a two man show with Malcolm Riley and Chris Thomas pouring in 23 points apiece with eleven and five rebounds respectively. Tonnie Collier added 15 points while Madarious Gibbs followed with 14 points and seven boards.
