The Eastern Kentucky Colonels were one of the hottest teams down the stretch in the Ohio Valley as winners in eight of ten with both losses coming at the hands of Belmont with the last one eliminating them from the conference playoffs and with a 19-11 record and a number 276 strength of schedule there was no NCAA invite. The Colonels outscored opponents 72-63 so they had potential at both ends of the floor and owned a double figure win over Miami which was a surprise. Corey Walden was the nucleus of a strong offense with 18 points on 53.7% shooting followed by Eric Stutz with almost 16 points with Tommy Knipp adding over ten points.
The Norfolk State Spartans might be the best known team from the MEAC with their success in the NCAA tournament a few years back. That success did them no good this season as they were booted from the conference postseason in the semifinal round by eventual champion Hampton. The Spartans score 70 points on nearly 47% shooting and give up 66 on less then 41% so they prefer a quick pace. Despite the #281 SOS the Spartans did play the likes of Baylor, Virginia and Georgia but were big losers. A dangerous offense isled by Jeff Short with over 19 points and 50% marksmanship with RaShid Gaston next in line with 15 points and 9.5 rebound on 61.6% accuracy. D’Shon Taylor rounded out a very productive top three with 13 points.
The Spartans are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a winning home record. Norfolk State are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Tuesday games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss. The Colonels are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a S.U. loss and 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 Tuesday games. Eastern Kentucky are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS loss and 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games. This is a big spread with the Colonels having blow out potential but Norfolk State is not trash…
