The Hampton Pirates are the only team in the tournament with a losing record at 16-17 but did a solid job in the MEAC at 12-8 and obviously got hot at the right time in winning the conference crown and automatic berth in to the Big Dance. The numbers don’t jump out at us as the Pirates are outscored 68-67 with both 41% shooting at the offensive and defensive end. The number 334 strength of schedule has a few top 100 teams on it but no wins. The Pirates were a balanced offense with Dwight Meikle pacing the team with 13 points and over seven rebounds with Deron Powers and Quinton Chievous adding around ten points while Reginald Johnson netting 12 points.
In some ways I’m a bit surprised the Manhattan Jaspers are in the play in game but the numbers say it’s justified with the #282 SOS. The Jaspers finished the year at 19-13 and 16-7 in the MAAC with a few uneven performances preventing a 20 win season. The Jaspers did well considering they outscored opponents by just 70-68 and were red hot to end the year as winners in seven of eight capped off with a win over regular season champ Iona to earn their second straight trip to the Big Dance. Emmy Andujar is the star of this offense at over 16 points and nearly eight rebounds. Ashton Pankey and Shane Richards were 13+ point scorers but this offense was capable of a lot more when at the top of their game.
The Pirates are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. win and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. Hampton are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 neutral site games. The Jaspers are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. win and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record. Manhattan are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 neutral site games and 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall. Manhattan has blow out potential but I like the way Hampton has played and hopefully this is competitive…
