The Rhode Island Rams lost in the semifinals of the Atlantic Ten playoffs to drop their record to 22-9 and that combined with the number 126 strength of schedule left them out in the cold with the NCAA tournament. The Rams numbers say they could score at 67 points on 45% shooting with tremendous stopping power on defense at 59 points allowed on 40.7% marksmanship. In the end URI could have used another win (or two) against some of the better teams on the schedule or probably play a tougher non conference slate. EC Matthews was the top offensive threat at nearly 17 points and 4.5boards with Hassan Martin the only other player to score in double figures with eleven points with a team high 7.6 rebounds.
The Iona Gaels won the MAAC regular season crown with a 19-4 conference mark before losing to Manhattan in the conference title game which assured they would no go Dancing despite a 26-8 record wit the #210 strength of schedule to blame. Few teams could light up the scoreboard like the Gaels who averaged nearly 80 points on 46.8% shooting with the opposition averaging around 73. Hurting this team further was the conference was not highly ranked and too many close contests against inferior competition didn’t help their cause. Few teams anywhere in the country had a more potent one, two punch then AJ English and David Laury who averaged just less then 20 points with five and 9.5 rebounds respectively with English handing out five assists.
The Gaels are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games following three or more consecutive home games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. Iona are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games following a S.U. loss and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 Tuesday games. The Rams are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a S.U. loss and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS loss. Rhode Island are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 non-conference games. If Iona is able to mount any kind of consistency on offense then I’ll take the points…
