The Mercer Bears return to the SoCon wasn’t all that bad with a 13-7 record with an overall mark of 18-15. I say not bad because the squad lost some really good players from last season’s NCAA tournament team. The Bears still go about their business as usual with 67 points scored on 44% from the floor while giving up62 points on less then 42% so there is some need to control the scoreboard from a defensive view point. The Bears played a few bigger names but have nothing to show for their efforts with the conference schedule proving to be enough of a challenge over the final month of the regular season. Ike Nwamu led the team with almost 15 points with Darious Moten netting eleven points but there were three others capable of cracking double figures on any given night.
I think the Stony Brook Seawolves should be in the field of 64 were it not for a loose ball going to the perimeter and consequently ending up as a buzzer beating three in a 51-50 loss at Albany in the America east championship. The 23-11 Seawolves are the definition of defensive minded with less then 60 points allowed on 39.5% while averaging round 65 points. The Seawolves had won eight straight contests before losing in the title game to the top ranked Great Danes. The Seawolves will need to maintain discipline at both ends of the floor if they expect to win in the CBI which means the two big guns in Jameel Warney and Carson Puriefoy must continue to play well meaning Warney and his 17 points and over eleven rebounds and Puriefoy and his 14 points can’t disappear.
The Seawolves are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 road games and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall. Stony Brook are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600 and 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. The Bears are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. loss and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record. Mercer are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a ATS loss and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 home games. Each team has things they do well and not so well but when you add them all up I gravitate to Stony Brook…
