The Northwestern State Demons had the misfortune of playing in the Southland which was home to Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston State which is self explanatory. Despite the big time competition the Demons still went 13-5 in the conference and 19-12 overall. Offense, offense and more offense describes this team that is tops in the nation at 84 points on 46% shooting while allowing 82 points on 47% accuracy. Northwestern State has plenty of offensive options led by Zikiteran Woodley at nearly 23 points and five boards on 56.5% from the floor while Jalen West pumped in over 19 points and handed out a team high 7.7assists. Eight others averaged between 4-8 points so scoring was not an issue.
If you follow the Ohio Valley then you are well aware of teams such as Belmont and Murray State but Tennessee-Martin? Probably just another name to most and especially so with wins being difficult to come by in the past. Not this season with the Skyhawks going 10-6 in the conference and 18-12 overall. UTM could but the ball in the basket at 70 points on 46.8% while allowing 65 points. The number 314 strength of schedule does make us wonder where this team does stand however. This offense was as balanced as any in the country with four double digit scorers. Deville Smith, Marshun Newell and Twymond Howard were each 13+ scorers with a combined 17 rebounds with Alex Anderson adding almost 12 points.
The Skyhawks are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 Thursday games. UTM are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 road games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a S.U. loss. The Demons are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall. Northwestern State are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record and 2-7 ATS in their last 9 non-conference games. No real edge to either side so I’ll try the home team…
