The Maryland Terrapins had a strong initial season in the Big Ten and their season stayed alive after they pulled out a 65-62 victory versus Valparaiso. The Terrapins led virtually the entire 40 minutes but couldn’t put the 36% shooting Crusaders away who connected on 12-26 from distance to stay competitive. The Terps hit shots at over 46% and used an 18-24 performance from distance to post a decisive eight more free throws. Jared Nickens, Dezmine Wells and Melo Trimble led the offense with 14 points apiece with Trimble hauling in a game high ten rebounds. Damonte Dodd and Evan Smotrycz chipped in with eight points each in a very balanced attack.
The West Virginia Mountaineers had a very tough opening round opponent with the dangerous Buffalo Bulls and their high scoring offense. However it was the Bulls who had the toughest go of it in a 68-62 defeat. The Mountaineers jumped out to a ten point lead after 20 minutes and held off a late UB rally. Both teams sank shots in the 45% range with Buffalo shooting themselves in the foot with 17 turnovers to make a winner of the Mountaineers small edge in free throws and field goals. Devin Williams led all scorers with 17 points and nine rebounds on 5-6 marksmanship and a game high five turnovers. Juwan Staten followed with 15 and seven helpers while Dexter Miles Jr. and Tarik Phillip combined for 19 points with nine players scoring overall.
I think West Virginia is exceptionally dangerous and I think that the team that will give them trouble will be the one that receives good guard play. The Terrapins are dangerous in that respect and this team gets to the line. Right now I’m leaning to Maryland but with another day to wait I’ll watch the line and see where the money is going so please check back for changes…
