The St. John’s Red Storm might have surprised a few people with their invitation to the Field of 64 but the numbers do merit their selection. St. John’s went 21-11 with a 10-9 record in the Big East but their schedule was an incredibly tough #21 so how could this team be passed by? The Johnnies fast paced attack scored 71points on 44% accuracy while allowing less then 68 points on 40.5% accuracy. The Red Storm faced Gonzaga, Duke and Saint Mary’s in non conference action, going 1-2 while facing a conference full of top ranked squads. D’Angelo Harrison led the attack with over 17 points followed by Rysheed Jordan added 14. Phil Greene IV and Sir’Dominic Pointer were 13+ point scorers with these four guys doing most of the damage.
As usual the San Diego State Aztecs were one of the top teams in the Mountain West with a 16-5 record but they lost in the conference title game to Wyoming and finished tied for first during the year but lost the tiebreaker to Boise State. The Aztecs finished at 26-8 on the number 89 strength of schedule as they have been riding the nation’s second ranked defense hat gives up just 53 points on less then 38% shooting which makes their own 62 points golden. SDSU has beaten Utah and Brigham Young and lost to Arizona by a basket so this team is not to be taken lightly. Winston Shepard and Aqeel Quinn average around eleven points with JJ O’Brien netting ten points with a score by committee bench giving the offense plenty of production.
The Red Storm are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a double-digit loss at home. St John’s are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games. The Aztecs are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 neutral site games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall. SDSU are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 vs. Big East and 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games following a S.U. loss. I always like defense but you have to score too and that’s why I’ll back the points…
