The Stanford Cardinal had some frustration of missing out on the NCAA tournament and took it out on UC Davis in a 77-64 rout in their NIT opener. The Cardinal led by a single point at the half before dominating the final 20 minutes 40-28. The Aggies were one of the top shooting teams in the country at over 50% but never got going with a mere 37%. On the flip side the Cardinal did not miss often at over 56% for nine more makes versus the Big West foe. Marcus Allen was the go to scorer with 22 points on 10-12 accuracy with Chasson Randle scoring 18 points and posting five assists. Anthony Brown and Reid Travis combined for 21 points with five and ten rebounds respectively.
Rhode Island ran all over a defenseless Iona club 88-75 in round number one of the NIT in a game that wasn’t as close as the score. The Gaels were blitzed 51-39 in the opening half which was game over with each team trading baskets the rest of the way. The Gaels never found the shooting touch on less then 34% marksmanship which made the Rams 39.7% accuracy look golden. Jared Terrell and EC Matthews paced Rhode Island with 18 points apiece on a combined 13-31 shooting with Reggie Minnis adding 13 points and five yanks. TJ Buchanan and Jarvis Garrett netted ten points each with Garrett hauling in ten rebounds. Hassan Martin grabbed a contest high eleven boards to go along with his six points.
Many people claim the PAC 12 was not a very strong conference and has too many teams in the postseason. The Cardinal are one of the squads that the public has soured on and have to make believers of the naysayers which should have happened in beating UC Davis. Rhode Island was good enough to make the NCAA tournament and probably want to prove it. No line is out yet but I don’t see a big spread but please check back…
