The Tulsa Golden Hurricane had a tougher go of it then many expected in their NIT first rounder with William & Mary. The Golden Hurricane prevailed 70-67 but were outscored 31-13 to end the game to turn a laugher in to a hold your breath finish that was too close for comfort. Despite less then 34% marksmanship the Tribe finished strong thanks to nine more looks and eleven more bombs and four more makes at the line while the Golden Hurricane relied on over 48% shooting to total five more baskets. Marquel Curtis gave the offense 21 points on 7-10 from the floor with James Woodard adding 15 points and a team high ten rebounds. Rashad Smith recorded 13 points and eight boards with Shaquille Harrison scoring nine.
Murray State was a giant in the Ohio Valley with a perfect 16-0 conference record before losing to Belmont in the conference championship. The Racers are out to prove they deserved to go Dancing and did so in the NIT opener where they handed a decent Texas El Paso squad an 81-66 defeat as a 5.5 point favorite. Both ends of the floor contributed with the Miners limited to under 35% accuracy while the Racers connected at over 49% which equated to eleven more buckets and a double figure victory. Jarvis Williams poured in a contest high 25 points and hauled in 14 rebounds on 9-18 from the field while TJ Sapp was next in line with 21 points on 9-14 from the floor. Cameron Payne did a little of everything with 14 points, seven boards and ten helpers.
There is very little we don’t know about what needs to be done by both teams to succeed. Tulsa definitely needs to slow things down and control the scoreboard and they need to make shots as well. The danger in playing Murray State is their offense is so good that a five minute lapse in defense is plenty of time for these guys to score a bunch of points. Please check back when a line is relea
