The Line: Cal Bears -15.5 -- Over/Under: 135 See the Latest Odds
The Cal Golden Bears and the Rice Owls face off on Friday Night as they open their 2015-2016 college basketball seasons.
The California Golden Bears have pretty high expectations as they enter their second season under Head Coach Cuonzo Martin. Cal was decent at the start of last season but they closed out poorly in Pac-12 play. The guard play for the Golden Bears looks to be very strong this season led by Tyrone Wallace who averaged 17.1 points last season and Jordan Mathews who averaged 13.6 points per game. Jabari Bird and his 10.5 points per game also return but he needs to stay healthy to really help California. Freshmen Jaylen Brown and Ivan Rabb figure to start for Cal. California was 244th in the nation in three-point field goals per game at 5.6 and they will need to improve on that number.

The Rice Owls appear to be a team on the rise and their second year coach Mike Rhoades appears to be someone on everyone’s radar. Rice was just 12-20 last season but they look to be an improved unit over what we saw on the court from them last year. Marcus Jackson looks to be the leader for Rice after averaging 14.5 points per game last season and he is a preseason Conference USA All Conference Team member. Max Guercy averaged 9.8 points per game and he led CUSA in free throw percentage. 10 players on the Rice roster are either freshman or sophomores.
Cal is 1-3-1 against the spread in their last five non-conference games. Rice is 5-0 against the spread in their last five road games, 4-1 against the spread in their last five non-conference games, and 2-6 against the spread against the Pac-12.
This is a big number, too big. Look for Rice to get the cover and put a scare in the ranked Bears.
