The Pepperdine Waves will travel to play the Fresno State Bulldogs in the season opener for both of these teams.
The Fresno State Bulldogs finished last season 6th in the Mountain West Conference with a record of 15-17 (10-8 in conference). Last season, Fresno State averaged 65.2 points per game while giving up 66.3 points per game. Fresno State is returning their top five scorers from last season, which will provide them with great experience and leadership going into this year. Marvelle Harris was the leading scorer last season with 16.4 points per game, 3.8 assists per game, and 5 rebounds per game for Fresno State. Cezar Guerrero, Julien Lewis, and Paul Watson all averaged over 11 points per game for Fresno State last year. All four of these players I have mentioned are returning for The Bulldogs and will provide the majority of the scoring, just as they did last year. Fresno State beat Dominican University of California 77-55 in their only exhibition game this season. Karachi Edo led the way for Fresno State with 14 points and 7 rebounds.
USA TODAY Sports
The Pepperdine Waves finished 4th in the West Coast Conference last season with a record of 18-14 (10-8 in conference). Last season, Pepperdine averaged 63.1 points per game while giving up 61.6 points per game. Pepperdine ranked first in defense in the WCC. Pepperdine is returning their top five scorers from last season, which will hopefully them improve on their low points per game total from last year. Stacy Davis was their leading scorer last season with 15.7 points per game and 7.8 rebounds per game. Jett Raines (10.6 ppg), Shawn Olden (9.2 ppg), and Jeremy Major (8.7 ppg) are the other top scorers for Pepperdine from last season. Pepperdine is currently projected to finish third in the WCC this season.
Pepperdine is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games against teams from the Mountain West Conference. Pepperdine is 19-7-1 ATS in their last 27 non-conference games. The under was 9-2 in Pepperdine’s last 11 road games last year. Fresno State is 2-8-1 ATS in their last 11 non-conference games. The over is 7-2 in Fresno State’s last 9 games the West Coast Conference.
Both of these teams are returning a lot of their best players from last season, which should make for an exciting game. Pepperdine was one of the better defensive teams last season, which could be the difference in this game. Even though Pepperdine is on the road, I am taking them to at least cover in this one.
