The UMKC Kangaroos and Minnesota Golden Gophers open their season Friday at the Williams Arena.
The UMKC Kangaroos enter their third season under Kareem Richardson after winning 24 games the last two years. Martez Harrison returns after leading UMKC with 17.5 points and 3.9 assists while Shayok Shayok averaged 8.8 points and seven rebounds. Noah Knight dished 1.3 assists and Darius Austin grabbed 4.2 rebounds. The UMKC Kangaroos will have a chance in any game this season with Harrison, who is probably the best player in the WAC. The Kangaroos also get back a healthy Shayok, who played in just eight games last season. The UMKC Kangaroos have a solid 1-2 punch and that may be just enough to contend in a conference that has been dominated by New Mexico State over the years.

The Minnesota Golden Gophers enter their third season under Richard Pitino after winning 43 games the last two years. Carlos Morris will lead Minny after averaging 11.1 points and 2.1 assists while Nate Mason averaged 9.8 points and 2.8 assists. Joey King grabbed three rebounds and Charles Buggs shot 32 percent from three. The Minnesota Golden Gophers lost a good portion of last year’s team, including top two scorers in Andre Hollins and Maurice Walker. The good news is that Morris is an experienced shot maker and freshman point guard Kevin Dorsey has a chance to be an impact player at a position of need. Minnesota is always going to compete with its press defense and quick pace style, but I question if the Golden Gophers have enough offensive depth to take that next step in the improved Big Ten.
The Kangaroos are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 road games and 7-3-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall. The Golden Gophers are 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games and 6-14 ATS in their last 20 games overall.
UMKC is going to have a solid season, but it's going to be tough to compete with the tempo and speed of Minnesota this early in the season. I look for the Golden Gophers to win this game by double digits.
