The Charlotte 49ers and East Carolina Pirates will square off at Carnesecca Arena this Monday night in College Basketball action.
The Charlotte 49ers (0-1; 0-0 C-USA) found themselves down by a 53-26 margin by halftime and dropped their opening game of the season after being defeated 85-74 against the Elon Phoenix. Charlotte struggled from the field as they shot just 36.9% from the field, 37.5% (6-16) from beyond the arc, and 58.8% (20-34) from the FT line. The 49ers allowed the Phoenix to shoot 47.8% from the field and couldn’t take enough advantage of the 17 turnovers they forced Elon to commit. Leading the way for Charlotte was Bernard Sullivan who had 13 points and 8 rebounds off the bench. Also contributing was Andrien White who had 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals and Ridell Camidge who had 18 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals off the bench. The 49ers biggest move in the offseason was hiring from NBA player Mark Price however, it should be a tough season for the 49ers as they have one starter back in Braxton Ogbueze (9.6 ppg, 2.3 rpg) and lost C-USA Freshman of the Year Torin Dorn who transferred to NC State. The 49ers will need to improve their defense this season to be competitive as they allowed opponents to average 72.4 ppg last season which ranked 307th in the country.

The East Carolina Pirates used a strong defense effort to defeat the Grambling State Tigers 61-53 and improve to 1-0 (0-0 American). The Pirates held Grambling State to shoot just 36.2% from the field and 27.6% (8-29) from beyond the arc. Eastern Carolina also struggled from the field shooting just 31.1% from the field and 23.5% (4-17) from beyond the arc however, did a good job getting to the free-throw line as they made 29 FT’s. Leading the way for the Pirates was Caleb White who had 21 points and 5 rebounds. Also chipping in was B.J. Tyson who had 6 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and Kentrell Barkley who had 8 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. Eastern Carolina finished just 14-19 (6-12 American) last season but do have some solid players in B.J. Tyson and Caleb White and did pull off upset victories last season against Memphis and Cincinnati. Eastern Carolina will look to improve down low as they had a rebound margin of -3.2 (ranked 292nd) and had just 1.9 bpg (ranked 328th) last season. Eastern Carolina does have some talented guards but still seems to lack overall size and will probably be nothing more than a mid-tier team in the American this season.
The 49ers are 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games following a S.U. loss however, just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall. The Pirates are 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400 however just 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 vs. C-USA.
Charlotte was able to fight back in the 2nd half to make the final score respectable however, Elon is projected to be one of the worst teams in the CAA this season and to be down by 27 points by halftime isn’t a good sign for the 49ers. East Carolina might struggle down load but they do have some very good guards and as I don’t think the 49ers have the players to take advantage of the East Carolina weaknesses, I think the Pirates will be able to win this one by double-digits. Take Eastern Carolina to cover.
