The Kent State Golden Flashes will travel to SIU Arena to take on the Southern Illinois Salukis this Wednesday night in College Basketball action.
The Kent State Golden Flashes (1-0, 0-0 MAC) was able to hang on late to defeat the Youngstown State Penguins 79-70 this past Saturday to win their 2014-15 season opener. Kent State was able to shoot 43.1% from the field and 33.3% (6-18) from 3-point range. Kent State dominated the glass outrebounding Youngstown State by a 53-34 margin and held the Penguins to 31.0% (9-29) shooting from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Kent State was Chris Ortiz who had a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Also contributing for the Golden Flashes was Kellon Thomas (18 points, 5 rebounds) and Xavier Pollard who had 15 points from off the bench. Kent State lost no longer has Devareaux Manley who averaged 13.5 ppg and 2.8 rpg but does return their top scorer in Jimmy Hall who averaged 15.9 ppg and 7.7 rpg. Kent State has two transfers in Xavier Pollard and Deon Edwin that they’ll rely for the backcourt but should once against be one of the better teams in the MAC with Jimmy Hall and Chris Ortiz leading the way.

The Southern Illinois Salukis improved to 2-0 (0-0 MVC) after easily defeating the Florida A&M Rattlers 81-51 this past Sunday. Southern Illinois was able to shot from 47.5% from the field and outrebound Florida A&M by a 44-33 margin. Southern Illinois will look to improve protecting the basketball as they did commit 18 turnovers. Leading the way for Southern Illinois was Anthony Beane who had 20 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. Also chipping in for the Salukis was Bola Olaniyan who had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Southern Illinois has a nice start from a rough offseason that saw five members of their team leave the program including Jordan Caroline (9.2 ppg, 6.2 rpg) who earned MAC All-Freshman Team honors. So far in the young season, Southern Illinois has been led by Anthony Beane who is averaging 16.5 ppg and 4.0 rpg. Bola Olaniyan (9.0 ppg, 12.0 rpg) and Mike Rodriguez (12.0 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 4.0 apg) also have had nice starts to their season and will be depended on to provide offensive support for Beane.
The Golden Flashes are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games and 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Salukis are 12-5 ATS in their last 17 games following a S.U. win however, just 3-9-2 ATS in their last 14 games overall.
Southern Illinois has picked up a couple of nice wins to start this season however, this is a team that is going to have trouble offensively once they start playing some tough competition. Anthony Beane is a solid player, but still is the only proven weapon on a team that finished 12-21 last season. Kent State should be one of the better teams in a competitive MAC conference this season and as they have multiple weapons in Jimmy Hall and Chris Ortiz, I think they’ll have no issue going on the road and picking up a solid victory against Southern Illinois. I think Kent State wins this one by around 10 points and easily covers this small spread. Take Kent State to cover.
