The Green Bay Phoenix and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will square off in the NIT Season Tip-Off at the McCamish Pavilion this Thursday night in College Basketball action.
The Green Bay Phoenix couldn’t find their defense for the 2nd straight game and dropped to 0-2 (0-0 Horizon) on the season after being defeated 103-90 by the East Tennessee State Buccaneers this past Tuesday. Green Bay was able to shoot 41.3% from the field buy struggled from beyond the arc after hitting just 26.7% (4-15) of the three-pointers. The Phoenix allowed the Buccaneers to shoot 51.4% from the field and 38.5 (10-26) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for Green Bay was Jordan Fouse who had a double-double with 15 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals. Kenneth Lowe (23 points, 9 reb) and Carrington Love (22 points) also had solid games for the Phoenix. On the season, Green Bay has been led by Carrington Love (27.0 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 2.5 apg, 3.0 spg), Charles Cooper (14.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg) and Jordan Fouse (8.5 ppg, 12.0 rpg, 5.0 apg, 3.5 spg). Green Bay was one of the better defensive teams in the country last season holding their opponents to an average of just 60.8 ppg but has really struggled against Stanford and ETSU as they’ve allowed their opponents to average 98.0 ppg on 51.5% shooting.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets improved to 2-0 (0-0 ACC) on the season after defeating the Tennessee Volunteers 69-67 this past Monday. Georgia Tech was able to shoot 39.4% from the field but really struggled from beyond the arc finishing the game shooting just 10.5% (2-19). The Yellow Jackets held the Volunteers to 35.1% shooting from the field and had 12 blocks in the victory. Leading the way for Georgia Tech was Nick Jacobs who had 23 points and 9 rebounds. Also contributing in the victory was Charles Mitchell who had a double-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds and Marcus Georges-Hunt who had 17 points, 7 rebounds. On the season, Nick Jacobs (17.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg), Marcus Georges-Hunt (17.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 2.0 apg), and Charles Mitchell (16.5 ppg, 11.5 rpg) have been the offensive leaders for the Yellow Jackets. Georgia Tech has done a nice job on the offensive end early in the season as they are averaging 22.5 assists/game and have a turnover margin of plus 4.5. Defensively, the Yellow Jackets are allowing opponents to shoot 40.1% against them but are limiting the damage done from beyond the arc as teams are shooting just 23.8% from three-point range.
The Phoenix are 16-7 ATS in their last 23 games following a S.U. loss however, just 1-6 ATS in their last 7 road games. The Yellow Jackets are 20-9-1 ATS in their last 30 games following a ATS loss however, just 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 Thursday games.
Georgia Tech should be better than the 12-19 team that we saw last year as Marcus Georges-Hunt, Charles Mitchell, and the addition of Nick Jacobs makes the Yellow Jackets have multiple weapons on the offensive. Green Bay has really struggled defensively, but they have played against two offenses that focused on pushing the tempo. Green Bay isn’t the same team they were last year but they have played two teams roads and have been competitive in both games. Georgia Tech is better this year but I don’t think there at the level to be almost double-digit favorites against a solid club. I’m taking Green Bay and the points.
