The Santa Clara Broncos have had a rough start to their season as they dropped to 0-3 (0-0 WCC) on the year after being defeated by the Milwaukee Panthers 71-65 this past Sunday. Santa Clara built a 6-point halftime lead but was outscored by a 45-33 margin in the 2nd half in the loss. Santa Clara shot an impressive 51.0% from the field however, struggled at the FT line hitting just 50% (11-22) of their free-throws. The Broncos allowed Milwaukee to shoot 47.7% from the field and committed 19 turnovers. Leading the way for Santa Clara was KJ Feagin who had 26 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. On the season, The Broncos have been led by Jared Brownridge (13.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg), KJ Feagin (11.7 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 2.7 apg), and Nate Kratch (3.7 ppg, 8.0 rpg). Offensively, Santa Clara has really struggled early in the season as they are averaging just 53.7 ppg on 34.8% shooting. The UC Riverside Highlanders (1-0; 0-0 Big West) had no issue opening up their season with a win as they easily defeated the NAIA William Jessup Warriors 100-68 this past Saturday. The Warriors hung around with the Highlanders as they were only down 9 at half, however, UC Riverside outscored William Jessup 60-37 in the 2nd half to secure the victory. UC Riverside shot an impressive 55.7% from the field and 46.2% (12-26) from beyond the arc but will look to improve their FT shooting as they shot just 47.6% (10-21) from the line. The Highlanders had 25 assists and limited the Warriors to shoot just 14.3% from beyond the arc. UC Riverside was led by Taylor Johns who had a double-double with 23 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks. UC Riverside has two of the better players in the Big West in Taylor Jones (2014-15: 16.3 ppg, 8.2 rpg) and Jaylen Bland (2014-15: 15.2 ppg, 4.8 rpg). Even with Johns and Bland UC Riverside will need to have some of their other players step up for them to be competitive in the Big West as they currently don’t have much of a supporting cast. The Highlanders will hope that Alex Larsson and newcomer Secean Johnston can provide solid productions for this year’s squad.
The Broncos are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games following a S.U. loss and 0-5 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games. The Highlanders are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 home games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 non-conference games.
UC Riverside is going to be a team that probably won’t contend for the Big West this season but will be a team that no one wants to play as they have two players that can take over a game. Santa Clara has had a rough start but has but has one of the better players in the Big West in the Jared Brownridge. UC Riverside is tough at home but Santa Clara has a good defense and I just don’t see them continuing to struggle on the offensive end as much as they have in their first three games. I’m taking Santa Clara and the points.
