The Delaware Blue Hens will travel to the Hynes Athletics Center to take on the Iona Gaels this Friday night in College Basketball action.
The Delaware Blue Hens (1-0; 0-0 CAA) opened up their 2015-16 season with a solid 62-56 victory over their in-state rivals, the Delaware State Hornets, this past Friday. Delaware found themselves down by 6 at halftime, but was outstanding defensively in the 2nd half limited Delaware State to just 19 points. Delaware shot 39.6% from the field and owned the boards as they outrebounded Delaware State by a 44-29 margin. The Blue Hens held the Hornets to just 27.6% (8-29) shooting from beyond the arc and only put the Hornets on the FT line twice for the entire game. Leading the way for Delaware was Marvin King-Davis who had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Delaware finished the 2014-15 season with just a 10-20 record but finished 9-9 in CAA play. The Blue Hens no longer have their leading scorer from last year in Kyle Anderson (14.4 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.0 apg) however, do have Marvin King-Davis (9.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg), Cazmon Hayes (11.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg), and Kory Holden (12.4 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 5.0 apg) returning. For Delaware to contend in the CAA this season, they’ll have to duplicate their defensive performance they displayed in their season opener as last year they struggled defensively, allowing opponents to average 68.3 ppg on 43.4% shooting.

The MAAC favorites Iona Gaels have struggled out of the gates as they dropped to 0-2 (0-0 MAAC) on the season after being defeated by the Oregon State Beavers 93-73 this past Tuesday. Iona struggled offensively as they shot just 35.5% from the field and 30.6% (11-36) from beyond the arc. The Gaels allowed Oregon State to shoot 50.8% from the field and was outrebounded by the Beavers by a 45-31 margin. Leading the way for Iona was A.J. English who had 20 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. A.J. English was named as the unanimous MAAC preseason Player of the year and is currently averaging on the season 16.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg, and 4.0 apg. Also contributing for the Gaels has been Deyshonee Much (13.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.0 apg, 3.5 spg) and Isaiah Williams (9.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 2.0 apg). Iona is a team that likes to keep the tempo fast and outscore their opponents however, Iona has struggled offensively shooting just 32.3% from the field and 28.8% from beyond the arc. If the offense isn’t going to be what we are used to with the Gaels, they’ll have improve defensively as they are currently allowing their opponents to average 88.0 ppg on 47.0% shooting.
The Blue Hens are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 road games however, just 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 non-conference games. The Gaels are 9-2-1 ATS in their last 12 vs. the CAA however, just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games.
Iona lost last season’s MAAC Player of the Year in David Laury (19.8 ppg, 9.7 rpg, 2.8 apg) and has struggled offensively in their first two games. Delaware is a young team as they really only have one senior (Marvin King-Davis) that sees any playing team and although they had a nice opening win, is a team that has generally struggled when playing non-CAA opponents. The Gales offensive hasn’t been clicking as of yet but they did play two very good defensive teams in Valparaiso and Oregon State to start the season. Delaware’s defense was solid in their opener but it’s still a weak area of their team and I think that A.J. English and the Gaels offense will finally get on track at home in this one. I’m taking Iona to cover.
