The Oklahoma State Cowboys jumped out to a 3-0 start thanks in large part to getting both ends of the floor on the same page. The streak came to an end in a 71-68, overtime loss to George Mason as a ten point favorite. OSU never found the shooting touch at 38% while the Patriots stayed alive on 41% accuracy including an 11-24 mark on threes while the Cowboys stayed competitive with a 13-2 advantage at the line. Jeff Newberry led OSU with 20 points and six boards followed by a 19 point, five yank effort from Chris Olivier. Joe Burton was next in line with 15 points and five pulls but the rest of the team mustered just 14 points.

The Long Beach State 49ers had won three straight to kick off the season before suffering an 87-52 defeat at the hands of Virginia. The Cavaliers jumped to an 18 point lead at the break and continued to press the issue until the final buzzer. The Cavs simply had too much firepower with nearly 56% shooting including 13-25 on threes and a +12 on the backboards which made the 49ers 31% accuracy fall well short. Nick Faust was the 49ers lone double digit scorer with 13 points on 4-13 from the floor with Justin Bibbins adding eight points and five pulls. Gabe Levin and Travis Hammonds each contributed seven points apiece but the offense needed several players to contribute more.
