USA TODAY Sports

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers improved to 2-1 (0-0 C-USA) on the season after defeating the Stony Brook Seawolves 67-66 this past Saturday. Western Kentucky couldn’t hit key FT’s down the stretch but their defense held Stony Brook scoreless over the last two minutes for the victory. Western Kentucky shot 44.8% from the field and 64.3% (9-14) from beyond the arc. The Hilltoppers held the Seawolves to just 36.0% shooting from the field and 21.7% shooting from beyond the arc, however, was outrebounded by Stony Brook by a 53-35 margin. Leading the way for Western Kentucky was Justin Johnson who had a double-double with 22 points and 13 rebounds. On the season, the Hilltoppers have been led by Nigel Snipes (17.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.3 apg), Justin Johnson (15.7 ppg, 11.3 rpg, 2.0 apg), and Fredrick Edmond (13.3 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 3.0 apg). Offensively, Western Kentucky is shooting 47.3% from the field and is averaging 9.3 three-pointers per game. Defensively, the Hilltoppers is allowing their opponents to shoot 40.5% from the field and are averaging 7.0 bpg.

The Bulldogs are 4-1-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. loss however, just 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 non-conference games. The Hilltoppers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall and 35-16 ATS in their last 51 neutral site games.

Western Kentucky lost three of their four top scorers from last year however, have gotten solid contributions Nigel Snipes and Justin Johnson which has allowed them to go 1-1 against decent teams in Belmont and Stony Brook. Drake has a great guard in Reed Timmer and although they’ve lost two straight, the Bulldogs seem to be a more competitive team than they were last year. Drake has some decent guards that can shoot, however, I think Western Kentucky has the better overall team and that they’ll be able to defeat Drake in this one and cover this small spread. Take Western Kentucky to cover.
