The Chattanooga Mocs improved to 3-0 (0-0 SOCON) on the season after they were able to defeat the Illinois Fighting Illini 81-77 this past Saturday. Chattanooga used a strong pressure defense to take a 7 point halftime lead and got two key FT’s by Tre’ McLean with 11 second left to seal the victory. Chattanooga shot an impressive 50.0% from the field and shot 40.0% (12-30) from beyond the arc in the victory. The 7th ranked Iowa State Cyclones improved to 2-0 (0-0 Big 12) on the season after they defeated the Chicago State Cougars 106-64 this past Monday. Iowa State has a little trouble with Chicago State as they had a 14 point half-time lead and outscored the Cougars by a 57-29 margin in the 2nd half. Iowa State shot 59.4% from the field and had 26 assists in the victory. The Cyclones held the Cougars to 30.7% from the field and 27.0% from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Iowa State was Jameel Mckay who had a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds. On the season, Iowa State has been led by Jameel McKay (16.5 ppg, 10.5 rpg,), Georges Niang (14.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 5.0 apg), and Monte Morris (13.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 6.0 apg, 3.5 spg). Offensively, Iowa State is shooting 52.2% from the field over their first two games while averaging 19.0 assists per game. Defensively, the Cyclones are holding their opponents to 33.3% shooting from the field and have a rebound margin of 13.0.
The Mocs are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record however, just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win. The Cyclones are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games after scoring more than 90 points in their previous game and 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. win.
Iowa State might have lost their head coach Fred Hoiberg to the NBA but they returned one of the better units in college basketball led by Georges Niang and Monte Morris. Chattanooga is an experienced team that is led by All-SoCon members Casey Jones and Justin Tuoyo and although they have a new head coach at the helm, they’ve started off their 2015-16 season with solid victories against Georgia and Illinois. Iowa State is a talented team but Chattanooga is certainly not a team that the Cyclones want to overlook and I think the Mocs have enough talent to keep this one within the number. Take Chattanooga and the points.
