The Santa Clara Broncs look for their first win against the Evansville Purple Aces on Friday night.
The Santa Clara Broncs are not picked to finish very high in the West Coast Conference and are 0-6 which generally explains their situation. The Broncs looked great but still didn’t get a win in a 75-73 loss to #11 Arizona where missed free throws at crunch time cost them a huge upset. Both teams connected in the 42%-43% range in a sloppy contest where there was a combined 36 turnovers. The biggest issue was Santa Clara had one dependable scorer in Jared Brownridge who poured in a career high 44 points on 11-29 shooting including 7-19 on threes and 15-15 at the charity stripe but he received very little help.

The Evansville Purple Aces are a team that many sat could pose a threat in the Missouri Valley and a 3-0 start to the year might have some believing before Providence delivered a reality check in a 74-64 win. The Friars took an eight point lead in to the locker room and held serve the rest of the way. The Purple Aces held a huge 51% -40% advantage in the shooting department but a 23-5 edge at the charity stripe trumped the shooting of Evansville. DJ Balentine paced the Purple Aces offense with 18 points and five helpers while Egidijus Mokevicious added 13 points and nine rebounds with Mislav Bzoja netting eleven points.
The over is 12-5 in Evansville’s last 17 Friday games. There are not any trends that seem to apply to this game as Santa Clara is struggling and Evansville is supposed to be improved. My concern here is the mental state of the Broncs who should have beaten Arizona…
