The Old Dominion Monarchs lost their 3rd consecutive game and dropped to 3-3 (0-0 C-USA) on the season after being defeated by the VCU Rams, 76-67, this past Saturday. VCU made an early run in the 2nd half to get a double-digit lead and although Old Dominion fought back, they allowed the Rams to hit back-to-back three points which secured the victory for VCU. Old Dominion shot 42.9% from the field and 50.0% (11-22) from beyond the arc in the loss. The Monarchs allowed VCU to shoot 47.9% from the field and 43.5% (10-23) from beyond the arc. The William & Mary Tribe fell to 4-2 (0-0 CAA) on the season after being defeated, 79-77, by the Howard Bison this past Saturday. William & Mary had a 45-26 lead at halftime, however, allowed Howard to come all the way back for the victory behind James Daniel’s 39 points. William & Mary shot 48.3% from the field and 50.0% (12-24) from beyond the arc. The Tribe sent the Bison to the FT line 30 times in which they hit 23 FT’s and only forced Howard into committing 6 turnovers in the game. Leading the way for William & Mary was Omar Prewitt who had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. On the season, the Tribe have been led by Omar Prewitt (17.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 2.7 apg), Daniel Dixon (15.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 1.5 BPG), and Terry Tarpey (10.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg). Offensively, William & Mary is averaging 78.2 ppg on 48.3 shooting from the field and 41.3% shooting from beyond the arc. Defensively, the Tribe is allowing their opponents to average 67.0 ppg on 39.0% shooting from the field and 22.6% shooting from three-point range.
The Monarchs are 7-19 ATS in their last 36 vs. CAA opponents and just 2-8 ATS in their last 10 road games. The Tribe are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 non-conference games and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
Old Dominion has struggled as of late but they still have one of the better defenses in the country and have arguably the best player in C-USA in Trey Freeman. William & Mary lost a heartbreaker against Howard however, as this is a team that has four starters returning from last year’s 20 win club, I don’t think the tough loss is going to have an effect on the Tribe. I generally don’t like covering spreads against strong defensive teams, but as long as William & Mary can contain Trey Freeman, I think they’ll be able to put up enough points at home to cover this spread. Take William & Mary to cover.
