The DePaul Blue Demons snapped their three game losing streak and improved to 2-3 (0-0 Big East) on the season after defeating the Norfolk State Spartans, 82-78, on November 23rd. DePaul was able to take a 38-31 halftime lead in this one but needed some clutch FT’s by Aaron Simpson in the closing seconds to secure the victory. DePaul shot an impressive 58.7% from the field and had 18 assists in the victory. The Blue Demons held the Spartans to 44.8% shooting from the field but allowed Norfolk State to damage from three-point range, as the Spartans shot 50% (14-28) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for DePaul was Billy Garrett Jr who had 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 7 assists. On the season, the Blue Demons have been led by Billy Garrett Jr. (15.4 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 3.6 apg), Myke Henry (12.4 ppg, 5.0 rpg), and Tommy Hamilton IV (10.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg). The UIC Flames dropped to 1-3 (0-0 Horizon) on the season after being defeated by the Drake Bulldogs, 83-62, this past Saturday. Drake used the three-point ball to outscore the Flames by 15 points in the 2nd half and secure the win. UIC shot 39.7% from the field and committed 20 turnovers in the loss. The Flames allowed the Bulldogs to shoot 52.5% from the field and 52.6% (10-19) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for UIC was Dikembe Dixson who had 13 points and 6 rebounds. On the season, the Flames have been led by Tai Odiase (12.8 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.8 bpg), Dikembe Dixson (10.5 ppg, 6.8 rpg), and Paris Burns (6.7 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 2.0 apg). Offensively, UIC is averaging 72.5 ppg on 39.1% shooting from the field and 27.1% three-point shooting. The Flames are shooting 63.2% from the FT line and pull down 44.8 rpg. Defensively, UIC is allowing an average of 75.8 ppg on 42.1% shooting. The Flames are allowing teams to shoot 36.8% from beyond the arc and pull down an average of 35.2 rpg.
The Blue Demons are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a S.U. win however, just 1-10 ATS in their last 11 non-conference games. The Flames are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a losing S.U. record and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 home games.
DePaul has played some tough teams (South Carolina, Florida State) to start off their season however, still need to improve on the defensive end for the Blue Demon to have successful year. UIC is in rebuilding mode under new head coach, Steve McClain, and have faced the same issues as DePaul early in the season with bad outside shooting and poor defense. I really like the energy that Coach McClain is bringing to the UIC program however, as he isn’t getting much production out of his seniors (Paris Burns and Jake Wiegand), I don’t think the Flames have enough talent to stay with DePaul. I’m taking DePaul to cover in this one.
