The Cleveland State Vikings snapped a five game losing streak and improved to 3-7 (0-0 Horizon) on the season after defeating the Loyola (CHI) Ramblers, 60-54, this past Wednesday. Cleveland State was solid defensively and used a 7-2 run late in the 2nd half to help secure the victory. Cleveland State shot just 34.5% from the field but was solid from beyond the arc shooting 41.2% (7-17). The Vikings held the Ramblers to just 23.1% shooting from beyond the arc and forced Loyola (CHI) to commit 16 turnovers. Leading the way for Cleveland State was Andre Yates who had 14 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal. On the season, the Vikings have been led by Rob Edwards (11.4 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 1.9 spg), Andre Yates (10.3 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 1.9 apg), and Demonte Flannigan (10.2 ppg, 4.7 rpg). The Bruins are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Saturday games and 9-3 ATS in their last 12 road games. The Vikings are 6-13 ATS in their last 19 home games and just 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games following a ATS win.
Belmont is once against the favorite to get the automatic bid from the Ohio Valley Conference as this is a team that is returning a bunch of talent from last year’s NCAA tournament team. Cleveland State has been strong defensively this season and will need to continue to be if they are going to win games as the Vikings have been really struggling on offensive as they rank 336th in college basketball in ppg and 321st with their 39.4 FG%. Outside of their recent loss to MTSU, Belmont has been competitive in each of their losses against some good teams (Valparaiso, BYU, and Evansville) and as I feel that Belmont will be able to put up about 70 points in this one, I just don’t think the Vikings have enough offense to hang around with the Bruins. I’m taking Belmont to cover this small road spread.
