USA TODAY Sports

The Saint Joseph’s Hawks won their 3rd straight game and improved to 7-2 (0-0 A-10) after defeating the Temple Owls, 66-65, in overtime this past Sunday. Saint Joseph’s shot 33.8% from the field and 26.1% (6-23) from beyond the arc in the victory. The Hawks held the Owls to 33.3% shooting from the field and 22.7% (5-22) shooting from three-point range. Saint Joseph’s outrebounded Temple by a 52-44 margin but could only force the Owls to commit 6 turnovers. Leading the way for the Hawks was DeAndre Bembry who had a double-double with 17 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. On the season, the Hawks have been led by DeAndre Bembry (15.9 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 4.2 apg), Isaiah Miles (15.4 ppg, 8.0 rpg), and Aaron Brown (10.6 ppg, 4.6 rpg). Offensively, Saint Joseph’s is averaging 72.6 ppg on 42.8% shooting from the field and 26.0% shooting from beyond the arc. The Hawks average 5.1 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.28. Defensively, Saint Joseph’s is allowing their opponents to average 69.7 ppg on 37.9% shooting from the field. The Hawks have a rebound margin of -0.8 and a turnover margin of -0.6.

The Redbirds are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games. The Hawks are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 home games.

Illinois State was picked by many to contend with Wichita State for the MVC this season however and although they come into this matchup with a losing record, the Redbirds have played a tough schedule to start the season including games against SDSU, Kentucky, and Maryland. Saint Joseph’s isn’t a very deep team but they certainly have talent in their starting five especially in DeAndre Bembry and Isaiah Miles. Saint Joseph’s is a tough place to play however, Illinois State is a talented team that could cause Saint Joseph’s some trouble with their strong defense and I just think this is way too many points to give Illinois State in this one. I’m taking Illinois State and the points.
