The Troy Trojans fell to 5-6 (0-0 Sun Belt) on the season after being defeated by the Ole Miss Rebels, 83-80 in OT, on December 22nd. Troy was able to fight back from a 13 point deficit with under 8 minutes left in the game to force OT however, couldn’t pull off the upset victory after they were held scoreless for the final 1:16 of OT. Troy shot 47.7% from the field and 30.0% (6-20) from beyond the arc in the loss. The Trojans held the Rebels to 42.9% shooting from the field and 28.6% (8-28) shooting from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Troy was Jeremy Hollimon who had 22 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, and an assist. On the season, the Trojans have been led by Wesley Person (17.9 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 2.0 apg), Jordon Varnado (17.6 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 1.1 bpg), and Jeremy Hollimon (12.7 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.5 spg). The Trojans have a rebound margin of -0.9 and a turnover margin of 1.5.
The Red Wolves are 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 games overall and 5-21-1 ATS in their last 27 vs. Sun Belt opponents. The Trojans are 6-18-2 ATS in their last 26 home games and 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games following an ATS win.
Arkansas State returned basically their whole team from last year’s 11-18 squad however, have struggled at the beginning of the season gaining only two wins against D-I opponents. Troy wasn’t projected to do much this season but has played some good teams (Ole Miss, Seton Hall) early on in the season and has two solid go-to players in Wesley Person and Jordon Varnado. Troy has struggled at home in conference play and although they looked good against Ole Miss, I think Arkansas State can repeat the success they had last year at Troy (64-55 victory) and keep this one close enough to cover with the points. Take Arkansas State and the points in this one.
