The Wichita State Shockers won their 2nd straight game and improved to 7-5 (1-0 MVC) on the season after defeating the Drake Bulldogs, 67-47, this past Thursday. Wichita State used a strong defensive effort and a 13-2 run to start the 2nd half to open up conference play with a convincing win. Wichita State shot 42.6% from the field and outrebounded Drake by a 38-28 margin. The Shockers held the Bulldogs to 37.2% shooting from the field and 37.5% (6-16) shooting from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Wichita State was Ron Baker who had 14 points, 5 rebounds, and a steal. On the season, the Shockers have been led by Ron Baker (15.8 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 1.6 spg), Fred VanVleet (11.8 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 4.5 apg), and Anton Grady (7.8 ppg, 6.0 rpg). Offensively, Wichita State is averaging 71.1 ppg on 40.7% shooting from the field and 32.8% shooting from beyond the arc. The Bradley Braves lost their 3rd straight game and dropped to 2-12 (0-1 MVC) on the season after being defeated by the Northern Iowa Panthers, 80-44, this past Wednesday. Bradley couldn’t get anything going on the offensive end throughout the game and didn’t put much of a fight after the Panthers went on a 13-0 run early in the first half to take a 22-9 lead. Bradley shot just 33.3% from the field and 23.8% (5-21) from beyond the arc. The Braves allowed the Panthers to shoot 58.7% from the field and lost the turnover battle by a 15-6 margin. Leading the way for Bradley was Scottie James who had 9 points and 4 rebounds off the bench. On the season, the Braves have been led by Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye (9.3 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 2.4 apg), Donte Thomas (9.2 rpg, 5.8 rpg), Antoine Pittman (8.0 ppg, 1.9 rpg). Offensively, Bradley is averaging 56.1 ppg on 37.0% shooting from the field and 25.5% shooting from three-point range. The Braves average 5.1 three-pointers and have an assist/turnover ratio of 0.51. Defensively, Bradley is allowing their opponents to average of 70.9 ppg on 43.0% shooting. The Braves have a rebound margin of -3.4 and a turnover margin of -4.9.
The Shockers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 Sunday games and 34-14-3 ATS in their last 51 games following a ATS win. The Braves are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss.
Wichita State is finally getting healthy with both Fred VanVleet and Anton Grady back playing significant minutes and look to once again be the team to beat in the MVC. Bradley has a new head coach in Brian Wardle and could be in for a long season as the Braves are extremely young and have had major issues scoring the basketball. Wichita State isn’t nearly as dominant on the road as they are at home but their defense is one of the best in the MVC and I just don’t see Bradley being able to keep this one within 20. I think the Shockers win this one easily and cover this large spread.
