Wichita State vs. Evansville - 1/6/16 College Basketball Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

The Wichita State Shockers had little issue winning their 3rd consecutive game and improving to 8-5 (2-0 MVC) on the season after defeating the Bradley Braves, 85-58, this past Sunday. Wichita State doubled up on Bradley in the 1st half taking a 48-24 halftime lead and led by as much as 30 points midway through the 2nd half. Wichita State shot 55.1% from the field and 37.5% (6-16) from beyond the arc. The Shockers held the Braves to 37.8% shooting and forced Bradley into committing 23 turnovers. Leading the way for Wichita State was Fred VanVleet who had 13 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals. On the season, the Shockers have been led by Ron Baker (15.1 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 3.4 apg, 1.6 spg), Fred VanVleet (11.9 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 4.6 apg, 1.6 spg), and Landry Shamet (8.7 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.7 spg). Offensively, Wichita State is averaging 72.2 ppg on 41.6% shooting from the field and 33.0% shooting from beyond the arc. The Shockers average 7.7 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.27. Defensively, Wichita State is holding their opponents to an average of 63.2 ppg on 42.2% shooting. The Shockers have a rebound margin of 2.7 and a turnover margin of 6.0.

The Purple Aces are 7-2 ATS in their last 9 road games however, just 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games following a ATS win. The Shockers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall and 34-16-2 ATS in their last 52 games vs. MVC opponents.

This should be one of the better games on Wednesday as Evansville is one of the teams that could give Wichita State trouble in the MVC this season. Evansville has two of the better players in the conference in D.J. Balentine and Egidijus Mockevicius and currently rank 3rd in the country in FG %. Wichita State also had a dynamic duo in the experienced Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker and has one of the better defenses in the country as they’ll force you to turn the ball over. Wichita State got off to a bit of a shaky start this season due to injuries, but as they are now fully healthy and are extremely tough on their home court, I think the Shockers will be able to pull away late in this one and cover the spread. Take Wichita State to cover.
