Providence vs. Xavier - 1/26/16 College Basketball Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

The 10th ranked Providence Friars won their 2nd straight game and improved to 17-3 (5-2 Big East) on the season after defeating the 4th ranked Villanova Wildcats, 82-76 in OT, this past Sunday. Providence got a big time performance by Ben Bentil in OT to get the Friars the big conference win. Providence shot 46.2% from the field and 36.4% (8-22) from beyond the arc. The Friars allowed held the Wildcats to shoot 29.0% (9-31) from beyond the arc and outrebounded Villanova by a 39-32 margin. Leading the way for Providence was Ben Bentil who had a double-double with 31 points, 13 rebounds, and a steal. On the season, the Friars have been led by Kris Dunn (17.0 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 7.1 apg, 2.9 spg), Ben Bentil (19.8 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 1.2 bpg), and Rodney Bullock (12.9 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 1.0 apg). Offensively, Providence is averaging 74.5 ppg on 43.4% shooting from the field and 31.1% shooting from beyond the arc. The Friars average 6.4 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.40. Defensively, Providence is holding their opponents to an average of 67.1 ppg on 42.5% shooting. The Friars average 6.9 steals per game and have a turnover margin of 3.6.

The Musketeers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS loss and 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games overall. The Friars are 10-2-1 ATS in their last 13 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of greater than .600 and 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall.

Xavier has been outstanding on both sides of the ball this season and has done a great job on the boards as they rank 14th in the country in rebound margin. Providence had a big week with wins over Butler and Villanova and has been getting great production out of Ben Bentil to go along with one of the best players in the College Basketball in Kris Dunn. Providence had a good week but still has losses at home against Marquette and Seton Hall and I think Xavier is just too much of a well-rounded team for the Friars in this one. I’m taking Xavier to cover this small spread.
