The Western Illinois Leathernecks welcome the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks to town Wednesday.
The Nebraska Omaha Mavericks have been a surprise team in the Summit but the competition is steep and they can not afford to lose. The Mavericks have won three of four after knocking off South Dakota 96-83 as a 7.5 point favorite on Saturday. A 52-42 second half gave the team a comfortable win behind 50% shooting and seven more free throws to easily outdistance the Coyotes 43.5% accuracy. Devin Patterson paced the Mavericks offense with 26 points on 9-16 with Jake White adding 24 points and seven boards. Tim Smallwood and Tre’Shawn Thurman scored 12 points each with Thurman hauling in ten rebounds while Randy Reed chipped in with nine points and five yanks.

The Western Illinois Leathernecks are in the role of spoiler as they have struggled virtually the entire season thus far. The struggles continued in an 88-67 defeat at IUPU-Ft. Wayne on Sunday where the defense had issues late. The Leathernecks trailed by four at the break before the Mastodons put up 50 over the final 20 minutes to pull away. Fort Wayne fired away at 56% which added up to eight more field goals versus the 41% shooting Leathernecks. Garret Covington led the Leathernecks with 17 points on 7-17 from the floor with Jabari Sandifer adding eleven points and six assists. Tate Stensgaard and JC Fuller combined for 17 points with Stensgaard snaring seven boards.
Western Illinois are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 Wednesday games. The Mavericks can’t afford to lose with things tight at the top of the Summit so on that note hopefully we see them press the issue for 40 minutes…
