Appalachian State vs. Louisiana-Lafayette - 2/4/16 College Basketball Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

The Appalachian State Mountaineers dropped to 6-15 (4-6 Sun Belt) on the season after being defeated by the South Alabama Jaguars, 73-60, this past Saturday. Appalachian State had a 30-25 halftime lead over South Alabama however, scored just one FG in the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half which allowed the Jaguars to build a double-digit lead that the Mountaineers couldn’t come back from. Appalachian State shot 31.8% from the field and 27.6% (8-29) from beyond the arc in the loss. The Mountaineers allowed the Jaguars to shoot 50.0% (29-58) from the field and was outrebounded by South Alabama by a 47-31 margin. Leading the way for Appalachian State was Chris Burgess who had 14 points, 1 assist, and a rebound. On the season, the Mountaineers have been led by Frank Eaves (20.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.2 apg), Ronshad Shabazz (10.7 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.4 apg), and Chris Burgess (7.8 ppg, 1.1 rpg, 2.4 apg). Offensviely, Appalachian State is averaging 69.6 ppg on 40.3% shooting from the field and 36.8% shooting from beyond the arc. The Mountaineers average 8.3 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 0.73. Defensively, Appalachian State is allowing their opponents to average 76.4 ppg on 45.3% shooting from the field. The Mountaineers have a rebound margin of -1.8 and a turnover margin of -4.1.

The Ragin Cajuns are 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400 and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Mountaineers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up loss and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a ATS loss.

Louisiana Lafayette struggled with a tough non-conference schedule, however, the Ragin Cajuns have been outstanding recently in conference play and showing everyone why many thought they would be the Sun Belt champions by the end of the season. Appalachian State has been able to pick up a few decent conference wins however, the Mountaineers have struggled a bit offensively if they can’t get hit three-pointers as they rank 318th in the country in FG %. Louisiana Lafayette has the best player in the conference in Shawn Long and as Appalachian State had no answers for the Ragin Cajuns in a 79-58 loss earlier this season, I think Louisiana Lafayette will be able to cover this mid-range spread on the road. Take Louisiana Lafayette to cover.
