The Mercer Bears won their 4th straight game and improved to 18-6 (8-3 Summit) on the season after defeating The Citadel Bulldogs, 88-72, this past Saturday. Mercer was able to race out to a 14-2 lead to start the game and had little trouble closing out the Bulldogs after gaining a 43-30 halftime lead. Mercer shot 48.5% from the field and 30.8% (4-13) from beyond the arc. The Bears held the Bulldogs to 33.3% shooting from the field and 25.6% (11-43) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Mercer was Andrew Fisher who had a double-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks from off the bench. On the season, the Bears have been led by Jestin Lewis (14.0 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.5 spg), Stephon Jelks (12.2 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 2.1 apg), and Phillip Leonard (10.0 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 5.1 apg). Offensively, Mercer is averaging 73.2 ppg on 46.1% shooting from the field and 34.5% shooting from beyond the arc. The Bears average 6.0 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.15. Defensively, Mercer is holding their opponents to an average of 65.8 ppg on 38.8% shooting. The Bears have a rebound margin of 10.8 and a turnover margin of -2.3. Mercer is currently without Jestin Lewis who was suspended indefinitely prior to their game against The Citadel.
The Mocs are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record. The Bears are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up win and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
Chattanooga sits atop the Southern standings as they are one of the better well-balanced teams in the country and rank on the top-100 in the country in both scoring offense and defense. Mercer has had a solid season and playing with a lot of emotion while mourning the death of their teammate, Jibri Bryan, who passed away last week. Mercer has one of the better defenses in the country as they rank 46th in the country in scoring defense and 15th in defensive FG%. Mercer will throw everything they have against the conference leaders, however, as I think the loss of Jestin Lewis will be really hurt the Bears on the offensive end, I think the Mocs will be able to get the big road win and cover this small spread.
