The 18th ranked Purdue Boilermakers had their two game winning streak snapped and dropped to 19-5 (7-4 Big 10) on the season after being defeated by the 4th ranked Maryland Terrapins, 72-61, this past Saturday. Purdue held a 30-27 halftime lead but struggled on both sides of the ball in the 2nd half and was outscored by a 25-10 margin over the finals six minutes in the loss. Purdue shot 40.6% from the field and just 12.0% (3-25) from beyond the arc. The Boilermakers allowed the Terrapins to shoot 40.7% from the field and 22.2% (4-18) from three-point range. Leading the way for Purdue was A.J. Hammons who had a double-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and a steal. On the season, the Boilermakers have been led by A.J. Hammons (14.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 2.4 bpg), Vince Edwards (10.4 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 3.1 apg), and Caleb Swanigan (9.8 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 2.0 apg). Offensively, Purdue is averaging 78.3 ppg on 46.3% shooting from the field and 34.9% shooting from beyond the arc. The Boilermakers average 7.8 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.45. Defensively, Purdue is holding their opponents to an average of 63.0 ppg on 38.2% shooting. The Boilermakers have a rebound margin of 11.8 and have a turnover margin of -2.0.

The Spartans are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up win. The Boilermakers are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 Tuesday games and 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games following a straight up loss.

Michigan State seems to have gotten back on track after their three-game losing streak a couple of weeks ago and have been great on the offensive as of late as the Spartans are averaging 87 ppg over their last three games. Purdue couldn’t get their defense to hold up in the 2nd half against Maryland however, the Boilmakers have been one of the better defensive teams in the country as they rank 15th in the country in scoring defense and 11th in defensive FG%. I think this one is going to come down to whether the Boilermakers defense can slow down the Spartans offense and although I do like this Purdue team, I think the Spartans are rolling right now and will be able to get the big conference road win. Take Michigan State and the points.
