The Missouri State Bears had their two-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 10-14 (6-6 MVC) on the season after being defeated by the Evansville Purple Aces, 83-64, this past Saturday. Missouri State was down by a 40-27 margin at halftime and didn’t have much chance of a comeback after falling behind 50-31 early in the 2nd half. The Northern Iowa Panthers won their 4th straight game and improved to 14-11 (6-6 MVC) on the season after defeating the Drake Bulldogs, 82-66, this past Saturday. Northern Iowa used a 16-5 run last in the 1st half to take a 41-28 halftime lead and had little trouble putting away the Bulldogs in the 2nd half. Northern Iowa was outstanding offensively as they shot 61.2% from the field and 54.5% (12-22) from beyond the arc. The Panthers allowed the Bulldogs to shoot 47.9% from the field and won the turnover battle by a 15-7 margin. Leading the way for Northern Iowa was Paul Jesperson who had 21 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal. On the season, the Panthers have been led by Wes Washpun (14.3 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 5.6 apg), Matt Bohannon (12.4 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 1.2 apg), and Paul Jesperson (12.0 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.1 apg). Offensively, Northern Iowa is averaging 69.8 ppg on 46.7% shooting from the field and 38.7% shooting from beyond the arc. The Panthers average 8.6 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.24. Defensively, Northern Iowa is holding their opponents to an average of 65.3 ppg on 44.0% shooting. The Panthers have a rebound margin of -3.5 and a turnover margin of 1.9.
The Bears are 3-0-1 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up loss and 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 road games. The Panthers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 14-5-1 ATS in their last 20 home games.
Missouri State struggled with their non-conference schedule but has been solid in MVC play posting six wins, including a 59-58 victory over Northern Iowa in early January. Northern Iowa struggled a bit at the start of conference play but has looked much better as of late and as the Panthers have an outstanding defense that ranks 38th in the country in scoring defense. Outside of their victory against Northern Iowa, Missouri State has struggled against the top teams in the MVC as they have loss by an average of 17.3 ppg in their three games against Wichita State and Evansville and I think Northern Iowa and their efficient offense will do enough on their home court to cover this large spread. Take Northern Iowa to cover.
