The Charleston Cougars won their 2nd straight game and improved to 18-8 (7-5 CAA) on the season after defeating the Drexel Dragons, 60-38, this past Saturday. Charleston was outstanding on the defensive end once again and was able to easily get the victory after holding Drexel to just 10 points. Charleston shot 45.8% from the field and outrebounded Drexel by a 34-29 margin. The Cougars held the Dragons to just 23.5% shooting from the field and 16.7% (2-12) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Charleston was Cameron Johnson who had 16 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals. On the season, the Cougars have been led by Canyon Barry (19.7 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 1.3 apg), Cameron Johnson (12.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.2 spg), and Jarrell Brantley (11.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.3 spg). Offensively, Charleston is averaging 67.2 ppg on 43.1% shooting from the field and 36.2% shooting from beyond the arc. The Cougars average 7.1 three-pointers and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.00. Defensively, Charleston is holding their opponents to an average of 61.9 ppg on 42.0% shooting. The Cougars average 7.5 steals per game and have a turnover margin of 1.9.
The Dukes are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up win and 7-2 ATS in their last 9 games overall. The Cougars are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a winning road record however, just 13-28-1 ATS in their last 42 home games.
James Madison was once again able to defeat the Hofstra Pride in OT and remain one of the tougher teams to beat in the CAA, espically when the Dukes are hitting their three-pointers. Charleston is the best defensive team in the CAA as they rank 11th in the country in scoring defense and has been solid as of late winning 5 of their last 6 games. Charleston has held their last two opponents to a combined 85 points, however, James Madison has some decent offensive fire power in Ron Curry and Shakir Brown and as the Dukes defense should give the Cougars some issues on offense, I think James Madison will be able to pick up the big conference road win.
