The Cal Poly Mustangs and the UC Riverside Highlanders take the hardwood in Big West action Saturday.
The Cal Poly Mustangs are 2-8 in the Big West and need a big run in the conference playoffs like they did a few years ago to go Dancing. The Mustangs have dropped five in a row after a narrow 73-70 defeat at Long Beach State with a spirited rally from an eleven point first half hole falling just short. CP hit shots at around 35% and forced 15 turnovers to total 18 more attempts but the 51% marksmanship of the 49ers and a few more free throws was just enough to squeeze out the win. David Nwaba ledthe Mustangs with a game high 24 points, 13 rebounds and five assists with Reese Morgan scoring 17 points before fouling out in 26 minutes. Trevor John and Luke Meikle combined for 17 points but getting stops and consistent shooting was an issue.

At 13-13 it’s not out of the realm of possibility that a strong finish to the year could have the UC Riverside Highlanders in the postseason somewhere. The Highlanders don’t have a lot of time to get things pointed in the right direction with back to back defeats after a 50-49 defeat to visiting UC Davis as a six point favorite. Nether team was a threat offensively with the Aggies connecting at 34.5% with eight more looks to total six more baskets. The 28% Highlanders stayed competitive on the strength of eleven more free throws. Taylor Johns was the best player on the floor for UC Riverside with 16 points and five yanks on 4-8 while Malik Thames and Jaylen Bland with Bland grabbing nine rebounds.
The under is 6-2-1 in Cal Poly last 9 Saturday games and the Mustangs are 7-19-1 ATS in their last 27 Saturday games while Cal Poly are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 road games. The under is 11-4-1 in UC Riverside last 16 home games and are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 Saturday games. The underdog is 20-6-1 ATS in the last 27 meetings. Not a whole lot to go on so I’ll go with the home squad…
