The Valparaiso Crusaders had their five game winning streak snapped and dropped to 21-5 (11-2 Horizon) on the season after being defeated by the Wright State Raiders, 61-59, this past Saturday. Valparaiso struggled in the first half falling behind by a 33-24 by the break and although they did mount a comeback to tie the game up late, allowed Biggie Minnis to tip in an offensive rebound with just a second to go that allowed the Raiders to get the victory. Valparaiso shot 41.7% from the field and outrebounded Wright State by a 31-25 margin. The Crusaders allowed the Raiders to shoot 48.9% from the field and 54.5% (6-11) from beyond the arc. The Cleveland State Vikings snapped their five game losing streak and improved to 8-18 (3-10 Horizon) on the season after defeating the Youngstown State Penguins, 64-59, this past Saturday. Cleveland State was able to get up by an 11-point margin at halftime and although the Penguins was able to cut the deficit to just three points, the Vikings were able to hang on for the victory. Cleveland State shot 46.0% from the field and 27.3% (3-11) from beyond the arc. The Vikings held the Penguins to 35.8% shooting from the field and 20.8% (5-24) from three-point range. Leading the way for Cleveland State was Demonte Flannigan who had 30 points and 5 rebounds. On the season, the Vikings have been led by Rob Edwards (11.8 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.2 spg), Demonte Flannigan (11.8 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.0 bpg), and Andre Yates (9.6 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 2.2 apg). Offensively, Cleveland State is averaging 62.4 ppg on 41.5% shooting from the field and 31.4% shooting from beyond the arc. The Vikings average 5.3 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 0.79. Defensively, Cleveland State is holding their opponents to average 67.7 ppg on 44.8% shooting. The Vikings have a rebound margin of -2.0 and average 6.5 steals per game.

The Crusaders are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Tuesday games and 11-4-1 ATS in their last 16 vs. Horizon League opponents. The Vikings are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games following a straight up win and 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.

Valparaiso once again couldn’t find a way to beat Wright State however, still has to be considered the team to beat in the Horizon as their average margin of victory in their 11 conference wins has been by 20.9 ppg. Cleveland State has struggled offensively all season as they rank just 334th in the country in scoring offense and 286th in FG%. Cleveland State has a solid defense and will try to keep this tempo down in this game however, Valparaiso’s defense should keep the struggling Vikings offense in check and I think the Crusaders will get back on track with a big road win. Take Valparaiso to cover on the road.
