The Western Illinois Leathernecks lost their 2nd consecutive game and dropped to 9-15 (2-11 Summit) on the season after being defeated by the North Dakota State Bison, 63-54, this past Wednesday. Western Illinois was able to give North Dakota State a fight on their home court but allowed the Bison to go on a 17-8 run early in the 2nd half to take 48-35 lead and couldn’t fight back from there. Western Illinois shot 42.9% from the field and lost the turnover battle by a 14-10 margin. The Leathernecks allowed the Bison to shoot 42.6% from the field and 42.9% (6-14) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Western Illinois was Garret Covington who had 21 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. On the season, the Leathernecks have been led by Garret Covington (17.4 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 1.8 apg), J.C. Fuller (12.9 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 1.8 apg), and Tate Stensgaard (8.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg). The Leathernecks average 3.4 blocks per game and have a turnover margin of -1.3.
The Jackrabbits are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS loss and 8-1 ATS in their last 9 games following a straight up loss. The Leathernecks are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 home games following three or more consecutive road games however, just 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games following a straight up loss.
South Dakota State couldn’t get a big win at IPFW and no longer sit in 1st place in the Summit League, however, the Jackrabbits are still one of the best teams in the conference led by the great backcourt duo of George Marshall and Deondre Parks. Western Illinois has had an interesting season as although they just 9-15 on the season, they do have a road win against Wisconsin and have been quite competitive in the Summit with many close losses. South Dakota State has struggled away from home this season as they’ve posted just a 7-7 record on the road and as the Leathernecks have been great defensively at home and getting solid offensive production from Garret Covington as of late, I think the Leathernecks will keep this one close enough to cover with the points.
