Middle Tennessee vs. Marshall - 2/27/16 College Basketball Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders lost their 2nd consecutive game and dropped to 18-9 (10-5 C-USA) on the season after being defeated by the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers, 78-72, this past Thursday. Middle Tennessee had a 65-64 lead with just under five minutes left to play however, allowed Western Kentucky to go on a 6-1 run to take control of the game and get the win. Middle Tennessee shot 46.6% from the field and was outrebounded by Western Kentucky by a 40-29 margin. The Blue Raiders allowed the Hilltoppers to shoot 51.8% from the field and 53.3% (8-15) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Middle Tennessee was Giddy Potts who had a double-double with 19 points, 12 rebounds, 2 steals, and an assist. On the season, the Blue Raiders have been led by Giddy Potts (15.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 1.4 apg), Reggie Upshaw (13.1 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.4 spg), and Darnell Harris (12.2 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 1.3 apg). Offensively, Middle Tennessee is averaging 72.1 ppg on 44.5% shooting from the field and 38.4% shooting for beyond the arc. The Blue Raiders average 8.1 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.11. Defensively, Middle Tennessee is holding their opponents to an average of 68.9 ppg on 43.2% shooting. The Blue Raiders have a rebound margin of 1.8 and a turnover margin of 1.7.

The Thundering Herd are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games following a ATS win and 5-0 ATS in their last 5 vs. C-USA opponents. The Blue Raiders are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 Saturday games however, just 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall.

Marshall couldn’t get a big win agasint the C-USA leading UAB Blazers but has been one of the better teams in the conference this season with an offense that ranks 5th in the country in scoring offense and 9th in three-pointers made per game. Middle Tennessee has lost 3 of their last 4 games and have struggled on the offensive end as during this span, the Blue Raiders have averaged just 69.5 ppg. Middle Tennessee has a 10-3 record at home this season however, didn’t put much of a fight against Marshall earlier in the season in a 82-66 loss, and although Blue Raiders should be able to score some points on the weak Thundering Herd defense, I just don’t think Middle Tennessee will be able to get the win while covering in this one. Take Marshall and the points.

Updated – Middle Tennessee just found out that their leading scorer, Giddy Potts, has been ruled out indefinitely due to a concussion. I imagine this line will swing a bit but even if Marshall becomes a small favorite, I like the Thundering Herd in this one.
