The Indiana State Sycamores and Illinois State Redbirds will face off at the Scottrade Center in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament this Friday night.

The Indiana State Sycamores finished the season with a 14-16 overall record and an 8-10 conference record to earn the 6-seed in the MVC tournament. Indiana State picked up some quality wins over Evansville and Northern Iowa early in conference play but struggled down the stretch losing 6 of their last 7 games of the regular season. Leading the Sycamores on the season was Devonte Brown who averaged 15.8 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 2.9 apg, and 1.0 spg. Also chipping in for Indiana State was Brenton Scott (14.9 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.1 spg), Khristian Smith (10.3 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 2.0 apg, 1.2 spg), and Everett Clemons (5.4 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.1 spg). On the season, Indiana State is averaging 68.8 ppg on 39.8% shooting from the field and 31.2% shooting from beyond the arc. The Sycamores average 6.8 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 0.84. Defensively, Indiana State is holding their opponents to an average of 69.9 ppg on 42.0% shooting. The Sycamores have a rebound margin of 1.0 and average 5.7 steals per game.

Illinois State vs. Indiana State - 3/4/16 College Basketball Pick, Odds, and Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

The Illinois State Redbirds was expected to be on the of top teams coming into the season and although the Redbirds struggled early, Illinois State finished the regular season with an 18-13 overall record and 12-6 conference record to earn the 3-seed in the MVC tournament. Illinois State was able to finish the regular season winning 9 of their last 12 games which included an impressive 58-53 victory at home against Wichita State. Leading the Redbirds on the season was DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell who averaged 14.1 ppg, 4.6 rpg, and 1.9 apg. Also contributing for Illinois State was Paris Lee (11.1 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 3.7 apg, 1.7 spg), MiKyle McIntosh (10.7 ppg, 4.8 rpg, 1.8 apg), and Deontae Hawkins (10.5 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 1.1 apg). Offensively, Illinois State is averaging 67.5 ppg on 41.7% shooting from the field and 34.0% shooting from beyond the arc. The Redbirds average 7.4 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.01. Defensively, Illinois State is holding their opponents to an average of 66.1 ppg on 42.3% shooting. The Redbirds average 6.4 steals per game and have a turnover ratio of 1.01.

The Sycamores are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 games following a ATS win however, just 1-8-1 ATS in their last 10 games overall. The Redbirds are 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.

Indiana State and Illinois State split their regular season series however, these teams seem to be heading in opposite directions at the moment. Indiana State has had trouble finding ways to score the basketball all season and have averaged just 61.4 ppg over their last five games. Illinois State is ranked 45th in the country in scoring defense and as I just don’t see Indiana State scoring more then 50-55 points in this one, I think Illinois State will be able to cover this mid-range spread. Take Illinois State to cover.
