The Troy Trojans lost their 4th straight game and dropped to 9-21 (4-15 Sun Belt) on the season after being defeated by the Texas State Bobcats, 78-57, this past Thursday. Texas State had one of their better offensive outputs of the season and Troy couldn’t make much of a comeback after falling behind by a 39-29 margin early in the 2nd half. Troy shot 39.2% from the field and lost the turnover battle by a 15-9 margin. The Trojans struggled defensively as they allowed the Bobcats to shoot 55.6% from the field and 64.3% (9-14) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Troy was John Walton III who had a double-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and an assist. On the season, the Trojans have been led by Wesley Person (17.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 1.5 apg), Jordon Varnado (13.2 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 1.2 bpg), and John Walton III (11.2 ppg, 8.1 rpg). Offensively, Troy is averaging 69.7 ppg on 41.4% shooting from the field and 31.4% shooting from beyond the arc. The Trojans average 6.8 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 0.92. Defensively, Troy is allowing their opponents to average 74.6 ppg on 44.0% shooting. The UT-Arlington Mavericks won their 3rd straight game and improved to 21-9 (12-7 Sun Belt) on the season after defeating the South Alabama Jaguars, 92-79, this past Thursday. UT-Arlington couldn’t be stopped offensively in the 1st half and cruised to victory after taking a 57-41 halftime lead. UT-Arlington shot 50.0% from the field and 42.9% (12-28) from beyond the arc. The Mavericks held the Jaguars to 40.0% shooting from the field and outrebounded South Alabama by a 43-26 margin. Leading the way for UT-Arlington was Kaelon Wilson who had a double-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 assists. On the season, the Mavericks have been led by Kevin Hervey (18.1 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 2.9 apg), Erick Neal (13.0 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 6.2 apg, 1.5 spg), and Jalen Jones (12.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 1.3 apg). Offensively, UT-Arlington is averaging 79.8 ppg on 42.4% shooting from the field and 33.0% shooting from beyond the arc. The Mavericks average 8.9 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.24. Defensively, UT-Arlington is allowing their opponents to average 69.8 ppg on 40.1% shooting. The Mavericks have a rebound margin of 7.7 and a turnover margin of 1.7.
The Trojans are 20-6 ATS in their last 26 games following a straight up loss of more than 20 points however, 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Mavericks are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 Saturday games and 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
Troy really struggled defensively against a below-average offensive in the Texas State Bobcats however, their offensive has been more of a problem as of late as during their 4-game losing streak, the Trojans are averaging just 61.3 ppg. UT-Arlington has had an outstanding season and have one of the better offenses in the country as they ranked 32nd in scoring offense, 36th in three-pointers per game, and 17th in rebound margin. This is a ton of points, however, UT-Arlington was able to get a 27 victory at Troy earlier in the season and as I think the Troy will bring a similar defensive effort as they did on the road at Texas State, I’m taking the Mavericks to cover this large spread.
