The Chattanooga Mocs butt heads with the Western Carolina Catamounts in the SoCon semis.
The Western Carolina Catamounts weren’t given much thought in the preseason but plenty of eyes are on them now as they are in the conference semifinals after knocking off defending champion Wofford 88-83 in two overtimes Saturday as a three point underdog. The Catamounts held a 46%-44% edge in shooting but separated themselves with 12 more free throws to offset the Terriers 13-6 advantage on threes. WCU received a game high 34 points and six pulls from Mike Brown with Torion Brummitt adding 25 points and 14 rebounds. Justin Browning and Marc Gosselin combined for 20 points and 13 boards while the rest of the team contributing nine points.

The Chattanooga Mocs are trying to win both the regular season crown and the conference playoffs. The Mocs took a step towards the second goal as they rallied from a five point first half deficit to edge Samford 59-54 on Saturday as an eleven point favorite. The defense held the Bulldogs to 33% shooting and 18 points over the final 20 minutes including an 0-14 mark from beyond the arc. The Mocs countered at 41% accuracy for four more field goals and five more threes to offset a 20-12 deficit at the line. Tre McLean led Chattanooga with 16 points and six pulls with Duke Ethridge adding 13 points and eleven rebounds. Dee Oldham was next in line with 12 points and five yanks while Justin Tuoyo chipped in with seven points.
I don’t believe the trends mean a whole lot here as Chattanooga was expected to be here and Western Carolina is a bit of a surprise. No line is out but the Mocs will be favored and the only question is by how much after the Catamounts defeated the defending champions. Please check back for a pick…
