The 4-seed Green Bay Phoenix was able to survive some late heroics by the Valparaiso Crusaders during regulation to defeat the Crusaders by a 99-92 margin in OT on Monday night. Green Bay blew a 77-71 lead late in regulation but used a 12-0 run in OT to be able to secure the victory and advance to the championship game. Green Bay was outstanding against one of the better defensives in the country as they shot 46.6% from the field and 54.5% (12-22) from beyond the arc. The Phoenix held the Crusaders to 38.4% shooting from the field and 31.0% (9-29) shooting from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Green Bay was Jordan Fouse who had a double-double with 25 points, 10 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 blocks, and an assist. On the season, the Phoenix have been led by Carrington Love (17.8 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 3.6 apg, 2.7 spg), Charles Cooper (13.5 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.1 spg), and Jordan Fouse (12.3 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 3.3 apg, 2.2 spg, 1.4 bpg). USA TODAY Sports
The 3-seed Wright State Raiders won their 3rd game in three days to defeat the 2-seed Oakland Golden Grizzlies, 59-55. Wright State once again used an incredible defensive effort to slow down the high-powered Oakland offense and was able to hang on late for the victory after taking a 33-25 halftime lead. Wright State was solid on the offensive end as they shot 50.0% from the field and 46.2% (6-13) from beyond the arc. The Raiders held the Golden Grizzlies to 37.0% shooting from the field and 30.0% (6-20) from beyond the arc. Leading the way for Wright State was Mark Alstork who had 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists. On the season, the Raiders have been led by JT Yoho (12.6 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 2.4 apg), Mark Alstork (12.5 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 1.7 apg), and Joe Thomasson (9.8 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 3.3 apg). Offensively, Wright State is averaging 68.8 ppg on 44.8% shooting from the field and 37.3% shooting from beyond the arc. The Raiders average 7.4 three-pointers per game and have an assist/turnover ratio of 1.19. Defensively, Wright State is holding their opponents to an average of 65.8 ppg on 42.1% shooting. The Raiders have a rebound margin of -3.8 and a turnover margin of 2.8.
The Phoenix are 4-0-1 ATS in thier last 5 games after scoring more than 90 points in their previous game and 4-0-1 ATS in thier last 5 games following a ATS win. The Raiders are 4-1 ATS inthier last 5 neutral site games and 4-1 ATS in thier last 5 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
Green Bay and Wright State split their regular season series as both teams were able to win their home games by at least eight points. Green Bay has one of the best offensives in the country as they rank 6th in scoring offensive but have been able to advance in the Horizon Tournament with a solid balance of great offensive and defensive play. Wright State has had an up and down season but has been outstanding on the defensive end during the tournament as they’ve held UIC, Detroit, and Oakland to an average of 56.7 ppg. Green Bay has to feel great knocking off the top-seeded Valparaiso Crusaders however, Wright State has won six games in a row and I think their defensive will be able to get them the automatic bid for the NCAA Tournament. The line has yet to be released but as I feel that Wright State will be at worst favored by a couple of points, I’m liking the Raiders in this one. Please check back for updates when the line is released.
Update (11:14 AM EST) - I'm not shocked to see the line set as a PK and I'm going to roll with Wright State and their defense in this one!
