The Line: Georgia Southern Eagles -2 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
The South Alabama Jaguars face the Georgia Southern Eagles in a Sun Belt opener.
The Sun Belt was a bit top heavy and the South Alabama Jaguars had some consistency issues that left the sitting in the bottom half of the standings at 8-12. The Jaguars finished with an overall 13-18 record and were outscored 73-69 which is something that isn’t conducive to winning when opponents average more points. USA closed the regular season with defeats in three of four where neither end of the floor came through so steady scoring and consistent stops at the defensive end will be key. Ken Williams averages a team high 15.5 points on 37% with Georgi Boyanov netting almost eleven points and totaling 7.7 rebounds on 50.5%. If Williams can get hot and hit more shots with Boyanov getting more touches the offense could be more efficient.
USA TODAY Sports
The Georgia Southern Eagles had opportunities to crack the top four in the Sun Belt but back to back losses to close the regular season left the team with a 10-10 league mark for 5th with an overall 14-16 record. The Eagles played things fast with their specialty being to score the basketball at 76 points but the flip side was opponents averaged around 75 points so there wasn’t a whole lot of wiggle room. This could be a dangerous team if the defense discovers themselves because the GSU offense is very capable. Tookie Brown is one of the top offensive players in the conference at 18 points with Mike Hughes averaging 15 points to give the Eagles a nice one, two punch.
The under is 6-2 in South Alabama last 8 neutral site games. Georgia Southern are 14-3 ATS in their last 17 games overall and are 14-3 ATS in their last 17 vs. Sun Belt while the under is 37-18 in their last 55 Thursday games. The Jaguars swept the season series but call me hard headed because I like the Eagles…
